College Life

Does the word college gets you in a panic mode whenever you hear it? Have you always thought of how can you survive college life? Then, you've come to the right place. My name is Diorella Garcia and I am also freshman student under BSTM in STI College Pasay-Edsa. In this blog, I will share to ya'll how I will cope up with college life by highlighting the character, skills, and values of an STIer. If you think college life is just like high school or senior high school days then you got it all wrong.

But before I continue I will first enumerate the characteristics of an STIer

  1. Character - An STIer must be a person that promotes good behavior despite the different circumstances. He/She can get along well with different kind of people.
  2. Critical-Thinker - Of course you must know how to become resilient especially when solving problem academically or even in real-life situations by thinking and analyzing critically with your unique and creative mind.
  3. Communicator - An STIer is a good listener and a good talker when interacting with other people thus he/she is also mindful & conscious to his/her choice of words.
  4. Change Adept - An STIer is good at dealing with changes to improve his/her capabilities and skills in the community where he/she belongs.
📌College Survival Skills

✔ Time Management

Time management is essential to avoid procrastinating and missed an important deadline especially in college because not all professors are that considerate. I'm not trying to give a meaning behind it but that is just the truth so might as well do your responsibility as a student to avoid unwanted situations. Here are some pointers for efficient time management:
  • Be responsible in prioritizing your tasks.
  • Organize your to do list by setting your daily tasks. (You can also use your mobile phone's app that reminds you on your tasks).
  • Set your own deadline one day before the actual deadline.
  • Avoid distraction because distraction can make you unfocused and suddenly unmotivated to finish a certain task.
  • Healthy Lifestyle like getting enough sleep and eating on time is important for you to have the energy to do your tasks.
Good Study Habits

Set your own study habits whereas for me, my study habits is motivating myself by thinking of positive outcomes it will have in the future to encourage myself finishing my to-do tasks and to keep a regular routine.

Note-Taking

Taking notes is also important to recall what the teacher had discussed and to understand it fully upon reviewing it. These are the five note-taking method by Oxford which is:
  • Cornell Method- it is best for understanding your key ideas and relationships.

✔ Examination Tips
Before the exam you must keep in mind to not cram and most importantly to avoid stressing yourself because stress can make you unfocused on what you are reviewing. In addition, you must eat well and get enough sleep the night before the exam to refresh your mind.

✔ Conquer Stage Fright

Speaking in front of many people can make us very tense and make your palms sweat non-stop at the same time make your heart beats faster than usual. This is called "stage fright" especially in college where you need to boost your confidence in speaking in front of many people. Hence, you need to overcome stage fright in college. The main reason for stage fright is because of negative thoughts and outcomes from your mind that might happen when you are presenting in front of many people such as fear of failure. However, to keep yourself from this negative thoughts you must learn how to be confident and think of positive outcomes when your presentation is done. For me, whenever I am in that situation I always keep in mind this quote that I got from the internet which is "With confidence, you have won before you started"
